The African American Expressive Culture in Philadelphia project documents
African American folk life practices in an urban area through photographs by
Roland Freeman taken between March 18 and November 1, 1989. Broad topics
include domestic, social and spiritual life; arts and crafts, music, and
dance; and sports. The photographic prints are 20 x 24 inch contact sheets,
each of which has many images. |

The contact sheets are arranged sequentially by the call number, which is
based on Roland Freeman's numbering system. The contact sheet number
correlates to a corresponding roll of film negatives, both originally
numbered by Freeman. As a general rule, Freeman's numbering system places
the images in chronological order but there are some exceptions. Because
Freeman sometimes used more than one camera the images taken from one camera
may appear a little before or after ones taken at the same location. Also,
when Freeman took multiple rolls of film at a single event he did not always
number the rolls of film in the exact order in which they were taken.
Occasionally Freeman assigned the same number to two different contact
sheets and differentiated the two by adding a capital letter "A" and "B" to
the end of the number. Some rolls of film are printed on two contact sheets
and in these cases Library staff added the lower case letter "a" to the end
of Freeman's number for the first contact sheet and "b" to the second to
sequence the contact sheets by frame number. |

Baptist Church, 54th Street and Wynnefield Avenue. Overhead shots of
parishioners and a service of ministers speaking, with choir. This is an
ecumenical service co-sponsored by at least seven churches. Speakers 1
and 2, Rev. Louise Williams and Rev. Robert Johnson Smith, had already
delivered their addresses before our arrival. At the pulpit, Rev. Rodney
E. King (#3) delivered words, followed by Rev. Anthony Trufant (#4) and
Rev. Tyrone Kilgore (#5). We left before the others were delivered. I
used 3200 ASA film because the light was very dim. I am having problems
with shooting black people in low-light church settings where I cannot
