Greatest Story Ever Told radio scripts collection
Scope and Content Note
The Greatest Story Ever Told radio program aired on the American Broadcasting Company network on Sunday evenings from Jan. 26, 1947 to Dec. 30, 1956. It was sponsored throughout the life of the program by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Written by Henry Denker in consultation with Fulton Oursler. Produced by Wadill Catchings. Directed by Marx Loeb. Actors performed anonymously, and are generally unknown, aside from Warren Parker, who is known to have voiced the role of Christ throughout life of the show.
The collection consists of working scripts for all but two of the 375 broadcasts. The scripts for programs nos. 82 and 90 are not included. Some scripts feature annotations with changes in text, the names of actors, etc. Each script bears a title page with a list of characters; in some instances, actor names are annotated.
The premier broadcast, "The Good Samaritan," was presented annually as near to the anniversary date as possible. Other regular presentations include "The Betrayal and the Crucifixion" (initally two separate programs) and "The Resurrection," presented annually during the Easter season; "No Room at the Inn" and "Flight into Egypt," presented during several Christmas seasons; and multiple programs devoted to the Sermon on the Mount. Wherever possible, notes are provided in this guide to aid researchers in locating repeat program titles for comparative script reading.
Beginning in the 1951-1952 broadcast season, the program introductions made reference to the Biblical book and chapter that served as source material for the adaptation. This information has also been included in the finding aid as a help to researchers.
