Scope and Content Note

This series contains cards, letters, notes, and telegrams primarily addressed to Bronislava Nijinska. Correspondence is a mix of personal and professional, sometimes within the same letter. Correspondents include collaborators such as Serge Diaghilev, Ida Rubinstein, and George, Marquis de Cuevas; choreographers Frederick Ashton, Anton Dolin, and Michel Fokine; composers Constant Lambert, Francis Poulenc, and Igor Stravinsky; artists and theatrical designers Marc Chagall, Salvador Dalí, and Alexandra Exter; professional organizations like Jacob's Pillow, the Royal Ballet (United Kingdom), and Teatro Cólon; and, family members. Select materials written in Russian or French contain translations or summaries within the folder. This series also includes correspondence addressed to Irina Nijinska after her mother's death and a few letters to Nicholas Singaevsky concerning Nijinska's professional activities. There are several folders of condolence letters sent to Irina on the occasion of Nijinska's death. A few drafts of letters from Nijinska are found in this series, but the majority of Nijinska's letter writing drafts are found in the Writings series.
