Scope and Content Note

The papers of Theodore Marburg (1862-1946) span the years 1856-1940, with the bulk of the items concentrated in the period 1893-1940. The collection consists of letters and related matter mounted by Marburg or his family in scrapbooks that overlap chronologically. Topics include Marburg's civic activities in Baltimore, Maryland, his activities in the cause of internationalism and peace before and after World War I, his role as American minister to Belgium, 1912-1914, his art collection, and his activities as an advocate of public works of art in Baltimore, Maryland. Acquisition Information

The papers of Theodore Marburg were given to the Library of Congress by his son, Charles Louis Marburg, in 1959 and 1963. An addition was given by the Estate of Elizabeth Louise Margolet in 2019.

Processing History

The papers of Theodore Marburg were arranged and described in 1995 and the finding aid was revised and expanded by John R. Monagle in 2009. A small addition (Vol. 15) was arranged and described, and the finding aid was revised in 2020 by Elizabeth Livesey.
