Scope and Content Note
The records of the American Lands Alliance span the years 1976-2009, with the bulk of the material dating from 1990 to 2008. The records are in English, and are organized into the following series: Administrative File, Alerts and Releases, Digital Files, Events File, Fire Management, Funding, Legislation, Miscellany, Northwest Forest Plan, Off-Road Vehicles, Restoration, Subject Files, and Oversize.
The Administrative File consists of board of directors meeting minutes, chronological work files, financial materials, personnel files, planning documents, reports, and other materials, providing an overview of the organizational structure. The Alerts and Releases series includes printed news releases sent to supporters, concerning various environmental issues, initiatives, legislation, and events. Material in the Events File chiefly concerns Lobby Week, an annual meeting in Washington, D.C., where conservation activists recieved instruction on working with lawmakers on a variety of issues.
The Fire Management series includes reports, congressional testimony, and other materials concerning fire management and policy under the United States Forest Service. Topics also include the Biscuit Fire in the Siskiyou National Forest in Oregon and California, the Cerro Grande Fire in New Mexico, fire dependent ecosystems, hazardous fuels reduction, fire suppression, and the United States Forest Service's National Fire Plan. Funding files consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, and other materials concerning donations, grants, and fundraising efforts. Prominent funders include the Bullitt Foundation and the Pew Charitable Trust.
The Legislation series includes federal appropriations, congressional hearings and testimony, environmental bills, lobbying campaigns, and material concerning the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the National Forest Management Act (NFMA). There is a significant amount of material concerning the timber salvage rider attached to the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations and Rescissions Act of 1995, the Healthy Forests Restoration Act of 2003, and the Forest Emergency Recovery and Research Act of 2006.
The Miscellany series consists of American Lands Alliance notebooks, photographs, press files, and reports published predominately by outside organizations. The Northwest Forest Plan series includes correspondence, alerts, congressional hearings, and reports concerning federal policies governing land use on federal lands in the Pacific Northwest, including conservation of the Northern Spotted Owl. The Off-Road Vehicles series consists of materials concerning the need for restrictions on off-road vehicle use on National Forest and National Park lands, as well as two major initiatives: a recreation program and a roadless campaign. The Restoration files chiefly concern collaborative forest restoration efforts, including salvage logging and stewardship principles. Subject Files span a variety of topics, and include materials concerning county payments, the Endangered Species Act, fisheries, industry, litigation, a recreational fee demonstration program, timber sales, and the United States Forest Service.
Digital Files include email archives, digital images, PowerPoint presentations, reports and publications, staff files and backups, databases, video files, and website materials.
