Born November 8, 1921, New York City, N.Y. Produced his first film for Monogram Pictures in 1947. Production head of Allied Artists from 1951, before entering into independent production with The Mirisch Company in 1957. Producer or executive producer of such films as The Magnificent Seven, The Pink Panther, Midway, West Side Story, and In the Heat of the Night, winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1967; as well as numerous films by the screenwriting team of Billy Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond.
